fall 2007 cont.
Her pink pillow faded into white as the morning light fell from her window. It seemed like hours before she finally closed her blinds. To her dismay this action was enough to keep her awake for good. No more fading back into the apathy she desired. Her day had begun. First thing was to remove the final pieces of her Zelda costume and change into something cozier. She immediately regretted giving into her depressive feelings so quickly last night. What little effort it took to change her mood astonished her. The morning seemed doable now compared to the haze she reveled in moments ago.
She stepped out of her room to the faint smell of pancakes. Enticed by the comforting nostalgia, She headed into the kitchen before it quickly faded as she found a cold griddle, bowls, and measuring cup still coated from a breakfast without her. A note on the counter gave her a recap, “Morning sleepy, I had an early shift, but I left everything out for you in case you wanted to make some yourself. ;) P.S. I’ll clean up everything when I get back, cross my heart and hope to die!”
At this point she thought why not if she didn’t have to clean up afterwards. She started sorting through the mess of utensils and bowls. She was always astonished by how many dishes Megan used to just make pancakes but she had a method and she couldn’t argue with the results. By the time she got everything together and ready to pour, Megan texted her, “I hope last night was as good for you as it was for me :)” and in an attempt to move on as quickly as possible she replied, “Totally ;)”
Just as she poured her soon to be pancakes, her phone rang with a call from Megan who nearly screamed, “Girl! I know that boy would be perfect for you! Did he give you a call yet?”
“Uhm… no, but yes, he was pretty hot…“ Sharon answered what she could but was a little lost on what details Megan knew and didn’t.
“Well he’d be a fool…“ Megan preemptively tried to defend her friend before another call came through from “Jason (guy from last night)” and then there was a streak of 5 uninterrupted rings before Megan yelled, “Pick it up!”
“Hey,” Jason (guy from last night) answered after a moment of silence on Sharon’s end.
Sharon simply couldn’t handle this series of events but eventually mustered a, “Hey,” in return.
Jason took the silence in stride as if this was some cool girl attitude Sharon had suddenly developed and after a moment continued unabated, “So that was fun last night, would you want to get some drinks later now that your party’s over?”
“It was? I mean uhm… ya sure?” Sharon replied unsure of anything at this point.
Again Jason leaned into the situation like this was supposed to happen and proceeded to break her, “Cool, can’t wait to see you Deb. Where do you…”
Sharon hung up as soon as she could and simply stared at her pancakes simmering with a brown edge curling up from the griddle. Before she could break her trance, her phone rang again with a call from “Jason (guy from last night)”
“Hey Sharon, are you going to pick that up?” Megan asked, still on the line from before and after several rings yelled, “Sharon!”
Her trance finally broke and she panicked and tried to decline the call to salvage what she could but hung up on Megan instead just as he was sent to voicemail. In a panic she quickly texted Megan that the pancakes had set off the fire alarm and that she’ll call her back. Which was a terrible lie for a single moment before the fire alarm went off as smoke surrounded her griddle. In a continuing panic she grabbed the griddle by the small plastic handles and threw it into the sink. After some fumbling, with the sink nozzle she indiscriminately sprayed everything, launching what remained of her pancakes everywhere. She didn’t stop until she saw a brunette step out of Megan’s room, climb the fridge, and turn off the fire alarm.
“Hey, maybe finish your pancakes before taking a shower next time,” the brunette snipped after she dropped from the fridge.
With a sigh Sharon tried to explain herself, “No, I got a call, and then a second call so like then I accidentally hung up on the first one. This seemed somewhat rational at the time,” but she again made a connection, “Are you Sarah and do you know Jason?”
Sarah dropped her gaze and confirmed Sharon’s suspicions, “Ya I know Jason, we have the same econ class, but hey that was a smooth move on an easy mark, so how’d it go?”
“Honestly, terrible he let some lousy excuse get him out of it,” Sharon divulged, seeing no further bottom from this point.
Sarah poorly stopped herself from laughing but apologized, “Sorry, that’s just so Jason… And I’m so sorry for you, but that like, blew my mind. That horn dog chickened out? What a dick.” About to give a hug, Sarah realized that Sharon was covered in burnt soaking wet pancake bits. “I have to make you so many pancakes!” She exclaimed before a phone alarm went off.
“You have to go, don’t you?” Sharon asked, which was quickly accompanied by a nod from Sarah.
“Hey, I’m gonna make you so many pancakes, next time. Oh, and can you tell Megan that I’ll buy her another,” Sarah paused to take a look at what she was in the process of stealing. “fish sweater?” She continued while she gathered all of her things before leaving in a rush. A grin crossed Sharon’s face as Sarah crossed the house, and on her way out the door Sarah yelled, “Next time, you’ll have fun, I promise!”
